In this episode of What's Brewing Tampa Bay, Mastry's Brewing Matt Dahm looks at seasonal trends and introduces us to another craft brewer, this time with the brewermaster Kenji Tomita from Crooked Thumb in Safety Harbor.
Mastry's Brewing In January of 2015, the Mastry’s operation began as a nano-brewery within a family member’s Italian restaurant in the Tyrone area of St. Pete. After over a year, the next step was searching for the perfect location for the brick and mortar microbrewery. In August of 2016, Mastry’s Brewing Co. opened its doors as the first microbrewery in St. Pete Beach! Mastry’s is an iconic name, and the family has deep roots in the area, including a well-known bait and tackle shop, a popular neighborhood bar located in downtown St. Pete, and an engine and marine center. Owner and CEO, Matthew Dahm, was inspired to open the brewery by both his love of great beer and as a tribute to his family – especially his grandmother, Juliet Mastry. Matthew, being a third generation Mastry, decided to name the brewery after his grandmother’s family to pay homage and continue to contribute to the family’s renown throughout the Tampa Bay area. Co-owners and co-founders are Matthew Dahm and Danie Dahm. Both Florida natives who were inspired by their hardworking and entrepreneurial parents who built their own businesses from the ground up. Avid craft beer fans, they began their own craft beer endeavor with Matthew home-brewing on weekends while Danie worked on her doctorate degree. Today, Matthew and Dr. Danie continue their passion for brewing excellent beer and contributing to the local St. Pete and St. Pete Beach community. Check out what’s on tap now!
Crooked Thumb Brewery owes it’s name to Pinellas County, which has been said to “hang off the west coast of Florida like a crooked thumb.” The brewery opened to the public in October 2015. The tasting room is a creative restoration of a warehouse built in 1963 that was previously an auto body and paint shop. The 6,000 square foot space is located just two blocks off Main St. in Safety Harbor, FL. The brewery houses a 15 barrel brew system with an offering of 15-20 beers on tap in the tasting room. Beer is distributed to the local market in kegs and special bottle releases. Crooked Thumb’s tasting room is a comfortable, laid-back space to sample beers and gather with friends. Much of the building’s original character remains. The bar and seating area feature views of the production area as well as the adjacent beer garden. With a canopy of trees overhead, the garden is a space with live music, yard games and seasonal events. Local food vendors serve a selection of foods on weekends. Located at 555 10th Ave. S., Safety Harbor, FL 34695 (727) 724-5953 info@crookedthumbbrew.com
