In this St. Pete Snapshot, St. Petersburg Museum of History's executive director Rui Farias talks about the historic Veillard House. On October 29, 1982, the Veillard House at 262 4th Avenue North  in St. Petersburg was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. Built in 1901, the Queen Anne-style residence reflects the city’s early residential character and the craftsmanship of its first period of growth. Its steep gables, decorative trim, and broad porch stand as reminders of a St. Petersburg that was still defining itself at the turn of the twentieth century.
Originally located on 4th Street North, the house was moved to its current site in 1979 to preserve it from demolition. The relocation and restoration effort were led by local preservationists who recognized its architectural and cultural value. When the National Park Service confirmed its listing in 1982, it marked one of the earliest federal recognitions of a St. Petersburg property for historic significance.
Today, the Veillard House remains a quiet landmark, its weathered wood and graceful lines recalling a time when St. Petersburg’s neighborhoods were small, shaded, and built by hand. Its survival tells the story of the city’s enduring respect for its past.
