It was supposed to be the perfect middle school rebellion. Tell the parents you’re sleeping at a friend’s house, grab some gear, and disappear into the night for a secret campout near the old millponds outside Eugene, Oregon.
But those ponds already had a history.
Years before he ever moved there, two young boys drowned in those murky waters. Years after he left, more bodies were found — brothers, gone the same way. Locals knew the stories. The kids knew the stories. They went anyway.
Hidden deep in towering blackberry thickets, the group built a small fire and tried to pretend they weren’t nervous. But as darkness thickened, so did the feeling that something else was out there. Not an animal. Not another kid. Something heavy, watchful, pushing through eight-foot brambles no person in their right mind would walk into.
When panic finally took over, they didn’t put the fire out. They didn’t grab their stuff. They just ran. Was it the echo of a tragic history tied to the millponds… or something that feeds on fear in the dark?
