👉Born November 12, 1871, Franklin “Uncle Frank” Fortune Pulver was the white-suited mayor who helped put St. Petersburg on the map. A born promoter, Pulver believed in the power of publicity, and his knack for making headlines earned the city national attention during his mayoral term from 1921 to 1924. He was both a businessman and a showman, and his story reads like a page from a Horatio Alger novel. As a boy in Rochester, New York, Pulver sold newspapers to help support his family. At 22, he took a gamble on an unknown product (chewing gum) buying a formula for $200 that would later help launch his success. By the time he arrived in Florida, he was ready to take big swings. As mayor, Pulver fought political battles, survived two recall attempts, and faced a third that finally unseated him. But his flair for self-promotion and love for his adopted city endured. Even on chilly days, he stayed true to his image: wearing his trademark white suit, with red flannels hidden underneath.
