What a joy it was to welcome Sandy Kachurek, director of the Into the Springs Writers Workshop, to our Ohio Writers' Guild Zoom session today! Sandy brought warmth, wisdom, and a deep passion for nurturing writers as she walked us through the heart and structure of this beloved Yellow Springs event.
Sandy began by sharing her journey—decades of experience as an English and journalism teacher, union leader, and published author—and how those years prepared her to step into directing a workshop designed for community, craft, and creative courage. When she took over the event in 2019, she reshaped it into what it is today: a one-room, shared-experience writing weekend where beginner and seasoned writers learn side-by-side in a relaxed yet professionally guided environment.
She introduced us to the 2026 featured guest instructors, novelist Tim Waggoner and poet Julie L. Moore, both renowned in their fields and deeply committed to helping writers grow. Sandy described how the workshop schedule intentionally weaves connection into every moment—from the optional morning writing sessions to the communal lunch, open mic readings, book sales, and focused craft discussions.
