Vuonna 1979 palokunta sai hälytyksen Travel Inn hotelliin New Yorkin Time Squarella. Savun täyttämästä huoneesta 417 pelastajat löysivät kahden naisen päättömät ja kädettömät ruumiit. Viisi kuukautta myöhemmin siivooja Quality Inn hotellissa New Jerseyssä löysi alastoman naisen silvotun ruumiin hotellihuoneen sängyn alta. Sarjamurhaaja, jota mediassa alettiin kutsua nimellä Torsotappaja, oli vapaana ja saalisti seksityöläisiä nyt kahdessa eri osavaltiossa.
