Justin Hugh, a Detective with the Fairfax County Police Department, took the stand today in the murder trial of Brendan Banfield. The former IRS agent faces four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of his wife, Christine Banfield, and her alleged lover, Joseph Ryan.
Prosecutors allege Banfield and the family's au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhães, used a fetish website to lure Ryan to the couple's Herndon, Virginia home before staging the killings to look like a home invasion. The defense disputes this theory, arguing that digital forensic evidence contradicts the catfishing narrative and that investigators who raised concerns were reassigned from the case.
Banfield faces life in prison without parole if convicted. The trial is expected to continue for four weeks in Fairfax County Circuit Court.
