Nick Reiner's Insanity Defense: The Carmichael Case That Could Set Him FREE — Or Prove He's Faking

The legal precedent that could save Nick Reiner from the death penalty already exists. TMZ's documentary on the Reiner murders cited the legal standard that made Carmichael's outcome possible. Under the M'Naghten rule, which California uses, the insanity defense has two prongs. You can prove you didn't know the act was wrong—OR you can prove you didn't understand the "nature and quality" of your actions. You only need one. Carmichael knew killing was illegal. But in a psychotic state triggered by the SSRI Paxil, he believed his healthy son was brain-damaged, suffering, and dangerous. He thought he was ending suffering, not committing murder. That delusion changed the "quality" of the act in his mind.

Nick Reiner's medication for schizoaffective disorder was reportedly changed one month before the alleged murders after he complained about weight gain. Sources say he became erratic, agitated, dangerous. He now reportedly admits to the killings but believes his incarceration is a conspiracy. The legal framework matches.

But the evidence doesn't. Carmichael had no manipulation history—Nick has 30 years. Carmichael didn't flee—Nick reportedly spent 24-plus hours navigating LA after the alleged crime. The precedent exists. The question is whether twelve jurors can believe the man who's spent a lifetime making sure no one should.
