Nick Reiner's Insanity Defense EXPLAINED: The Legal Test That Could Free Him

Nick Reiner is charged with murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner. He reportedly admits to the killings but believes his incarceration is a conspiracy. His only realistic path to avoiding prison is the insanity defense—and that defense will be judged by a legal standard written in 1843.
The M'Naghten Rule was created after Daniel M'Naghten shot the British Prime Minister's secretary while delusional. Queen Victoria demanded clarity on when insanity excuses murder. The House of Lords created a two-prong test still used today in California: Did the defendant understand the nature and quality of the act? Did they know it was wrong? Prove just one, and you're not criminally responsible.
Nick Reiner's post-offense behavior makes prong two nearly impossible. He reportedly checked into a hotel, navigated Los Angeles for 24 hours, and was found 15 miles from the crime scene. Flight suggests awareness of wrongdoing. That leaves prong one—nature and quality—as the defense's only viable path.
This is exactly what worked for David Carmichael. In 2004, Carmichael killed his 11-year-old son after a psychotic break triggered by Paxil. He planned the killing, researched prison sentences, expected punishment. But both prosecution and defense psychiatrists agreed his delusion changed what he believed he was doing. He thought he was ending suffering, not murdering a healthy child. He walked free in roughly two years.
Can Nick Reiner make the same argument? His medication was changed a month before the alleged killings. He has a schizoaffective disorder diagnosis. But he also has 30 years of documented manipulation and 24 hours of functional behavior after his parents died. The prosecution will argue that proves he knew exactly what happened. The defense must prove his perception was so broken he didn't understand the true nature of the act.
