Alan Jackson didn't just quit the Nick Reiner case. He previewed the entire defense strategy on his way out the door. Standing on the courthouse steps, Jackson told reporters: "Pursuant to the laws of California, Nick Reiner is NOT guilty of murder. Print that."

That's the insanity defense in one sentence. Three weeks of investigation. Every waking hour. Ten sealed subpoenas. And Jackson made sure everyone knew exactly where he was headed before circumstances he can't discuss forced him to withdraw.

Deputy Public Defender Kimberly Greene now represents Nick. She has nineteen years of experience. She was informed of Jackson's withdrawal the night before. She had thirty seconds to meet her client before the hearing began. She told reporters she'd had no contact with the Reiner family and didn't think they knew Jackson was leaving.

Rob and Michele Reiner spent seventeen years trying to save their son. Eighteen rehab programs. Seventy thousand dollars monthly in treatment. Ten thousand in monthly allowance. A guest house on their property. They funded intervention after intervention until they were allegedly killed by the person they were trying to help.

The arraignment is February 23rd. No plea has been entered. Nick remains jailed without bail. Jackson planted the insanity seed from the courthouse steps — loudly, deliberately, on the record. Whether Greene cultivates that defense or takes a different approach is now the only question that matters.
