Murder Weapon Still Missing, Autopsy Sealed: The Evidence Questions Haunting The Nick Reiner Case

The murder weapon hasn't been found. LAPD sought a court order to seal the autopsy reports. And Nick Reiner reportedly admits he killed his parents — but allegedly believes his incarceration is part of a conspiracy against him.
Those are the facts investigators are working with. According to TMZ sources with direct knowledge, Nick isn't denying the killings. What he doesn't understand is why he's in jail. That cognitive disconnect could be genuine psychosis from his documented schizoaffective disorder. It could also be the insanity defense being constructed in public before the trial even begins.
Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer analyzes what the sealed autopsy reports might contain and why LAPD is downplaying the missing weapon. She examines Nick's post-offense movements — checking into a Santa Monica hotel after the alleged murders, wandering near USC the following night. And she breaks down what years of wellness checks at the Reiner home reveal about the pattern of behavior leading to tragedy.
The TMZ documentary uncovered critical details. Nick's medication was changed approximately one month before the murders because he complained about weight gain. Sources say the medication still isn't working properly in jail. His family paid for eighteen rehab stays and dual-diagnosis treatment facilities, but Nick would only stay 30 days at a time. His own father said experts repeatedly warned them Nick was "lying or manipulating them."
The surviving Reiner siblings reportedly don't support seeking the death penalty. Prosecutor Habib Balian — who handled the Menendez brothers and Robert Durst — is leading the case. Legal experts predict at least two years before trial.
Nick Reiner is mentally ill. No one disputes that. The question prosecutors will have to answer is whether his illness made him kill — or whether he's spent decades learning how to hide behind it.
