Defense Attacks Magalhães Credibility: Netflix Deal, Jail Letters & "We Deserve Something" — Banfield Trial Day 2

Day 2 of the Brendan Banfield murder trial was all about one thing: destroying the credibility of star witness Juliana Peres Magalhães.

Defense attorney John Carroll spent hours reading letters Magalhães wrote from jail — letters in which she promised Banfield she wouldn't cooperate, told his mother she would "give my life for his" and "take the blame for both of us," and complained about facing life in prison "for someone."

Then came the Netflix bombshell. Letters revealed Magalhães has been negotiating with Netflix and other production companies about selling her story. She admitted on the stand that media producers are now paying her commissary after Banfield's family stopped covering her expenses. In a March 2025 letter to her mother, she wrote: "We do deserve something."

Magalhães testified she finally cooperated because she couldn't carry the guilt anymore. But the defense painted a different picture: she only flipped after Banfield was arrested in September 2024, after she was hospitalized for 10 days from stress, and after his family cut off financial support.

Carroll also pressed Magalhães on the FetLife messages at the center of the case. She repeatedly said she couldn't remember which messages were written by her and which were written by Banfield — a potential problem for the prosecution's catfishing theory.

But Magalhães had one moment that cut through the noise. When Carroll told her she was "holding the truth yourself and no one else knew," she fired back: "Well, Brendan does."

Magalhães finished her testimony today and is subject to recall. The prosecution says blood evidence will corroborate her account. The defense says she's a compromised witness who lied for a year and is now being paid to tell a story that keeps her out of prison.

Banfield has pleaded not guilty to four counts of aggravated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, felony child abuse, and felony child cruelty. If convicted on all counts, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole plus 13 additional years. The trial is expected to last four weeks.
