Juliana Peres Magalhaes Testifies Brendan Banfield Shot Joseph Ryan, Stabbed Christine Banfield

Juliana Peres Magalhaes took the stand on Day 1 and described what prosecutors say happened inside the Banfield home on February 24, 2023. According to her testimony, Brendan Banfield shot Joseph Ryan in the head, then stabbed his wife Christine repeatedly in the neck — while their 4-year-old daughter waited in the basement to go to the zoo.

Prosecutors allege Banfield and Magalhaes — the family's Brazilian au pair who was having an affair with him — created a fake profile on a fetish website using Christine's identity. The plan, they say, was to lure Ryan to the home under the pretense of a consensual sexual encounter, murder Christine, kill Ryan, and claim self-defense.

But the prosecution's entire case rests on a witness with every reason to lie.

Magalhaes spent a year in jail facing murder charges. Then she changed her story. Her plea deal gives her time served and a return to Brazil — but her sentencing is scheduled after Banfield's trial. That's not coincidental. Her freedom depends on conviction.

From jail, she wrote to her mother that she was "heartbroken" for what she was doing to Brendan. She said she still loved him. But she wanted to go home.
