Host Nanette Wiser welcomed distinguished guest Dr. Mark J. Walters, D.V.M. to our Thrive DTSP studio. Dr. Walters is the Professor and Chair, Department of Journalism and Digital Communication and Director, M.A. Digital Journalism & Design University of South Florida. We talked about his fascinating journeys around the globe as a professional journalist, scientist/researcher, lecturer and his lyrical reporting (and books) on communicating science and environmental issues/stories to the non-scientific reader.
👉Dr. Walters is the author of widely acclaimed books A Shadow and a Song, ecodemics in Seven Modern Plagues and Six Modern Plagues & How We Are Causing Them, Florida Scrub-Jay: Field Notes on a Vanishing Bird and Seeking the Sacred Raven. His writing has been praised by The New York Times, The New York Review of Books, Nature and numerous other scholarly and popular publications.
👉He has been a visiting lecturer at Harvard Medical School and an associate at Harvard's Center for Health and the Global Environment. Dr. Walters’ reporting and writing have taken him to Africa, Asia, throughout South America and Europe, Canada and to all fifty states. He received an undergraduate degree in English literature from McGill University; a master’s from the Columbia University School of Journalism; and a D.V.M. from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.
👉In addition to his scholarly work, writing and teaching, Dr. Walters is a bluegrass music enthusiast and plays the 5-string banjo.
