Au Pair Affair Trial Day 7: "Are You Going to Marry My Daddy?" — What Valerie Banfield Allegedly Asked Juliana in Hotel Lobby

Day 7 of the Au Pair Affair trial brought the most emotionally devastating testimony yet — and it didn't come from forensic experts or detectives. It came from a victim services officer describing what a child allegedly said.

Saly Fayez testified that an intel detective overheard Brendan Banfield's daughter Valerie approach Juliana Peres Magalhães in a hotel lobby just hours after Christine Banfield was stabbed to death. According to Fayez, Valerie asked: "Can I call you mommy now?" Juliana allegedly said yes. Then Valerie asked, "Are you going to marry my daddy?" The reported answer: "I wish."

The defense spent the day attacking the investigation. Homicide Detective Leah Smith testified she was told by supervisors: "There are two theories and you need to get behind the right one." A forensic analyst was transferred after theorizing Christine was the one using FetLife to communicate with Joseph Ryan. Defense attorney John Carroll argues investigators locked onto Brendan before the evidence supported it.

But the prosecution held firm. Lt. Giaccio testified Juliana only confirmed what forensics already showed. Detective Smith admitted the arrest was evidence-based. And then there's that hotel lobby conversation — testimony about a child who seemingly already understood what was happening in her family.

Court resumes Friday. Brendan Banfield has pleaded not guilty and is presumed innocent until proven otherwise.
