Sustainable Home Food Production
Our Florida farmers and ranchers are still planting and harvesting to feed Americans, but there has been an increased interest from people in growing their own produce. Creating an edible landscape doesn’t have to be expensive or hard, but it does take some planning and thought — especially if you hope to do so inexpensively. “Sustainable Food Home Production” is a series of articles with all the general guidelines to keep in mind as you contemplate starting your edible garden.
Vegetables
Vegetable gardening offers fresh air, sunshine, exercise, enjoyment, mental therapy, nutritious fresh vegetables, and economic savings, as well as many other benefits. Vegetables can be grown year-round in Florida if attention is paid to the appropriate planting dates.
Fruit
Many kinds of fruit can be grown successfully in the Florida home garden, including temperate fruits in the northern part of the state and tropical and subtropical fruits in the southern part of the state.
