The 22nd annual Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg revs up this week for the BIG RACE Sunday 3/1 with a kick-off INDYCAR PARTY in the PARK 2/26 and races 2/27-3/1, including the first ever NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series on the street course Saturday. It's the season opening event for the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and driver Will Power (originally from Australia) will be celebrating his 18th year in the sereis and his first year driving for Andretti Global after a long tenure with Team Penske. News Director Nanette Wiser caught up with Power about his racing journey, his rigid workout regiment, mental preparation and what he anticipates will be his biggest challenges at the 2026 downtown St. Pete race. The 2022 & 2014 INDYCAR Champion and 2018 Indianapolis 500 Winner calls Charlotte, North Carolina home, but loves racing here in St. Pete! Some fun facts?
  • His great-grandfather raced motorcycles, and his dad Bob was also a racer.
  • He has three brothers including Damien, a stand up comedian.
  • Power loves to play drums in his spare time.
  • "It's a funny thing to write down for occupation "race car driver."

INDYCAR Party in the Park will kick off the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg weekend on Thursday, February 26 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. This free community activity will launch the NTT INDYCAR SERIES season-opening event held annually in downtown St. Petersburg and will take place in North Straub Park, positioned between Bayshore Dr. NE and Beach Dr. NE along the waterfront.
