The Graves the Town Let Disappear | After Midnight

Ethan didn’t believe in haunted cemeteries. He believed in clerical errors.

When an 1894 burial ledger listed two names “north of the common yard,” he traveled to a quiet lakeside cemetery to correct the record. What he found was more than a misfiled plot.

At the rear boundary, beyond the maintained rows, he heard a man speaking calmly to fresh soil. Inside a wire enclosure that no longer exists, white wooden crosses stood without names. A single word marked the section.

Then it was gone. The graves were real. The town’s history confirmed a segregated ground that had been allowed to disappear. But the enclosure he stepped into had no physical trace — except for a distortion in a photograph where the square once stood.

He went north to fix a record. Instead, the cemetery showed him what it used to be.
