Big Broadway Energy host Stephen Riordan welcomes listeners to a lively episode celebrating community theater and the magic of the stage. Stephen spotlights American Stage and its beloved annual outdoor production, American Stage in the Park, held at Demens Landing Park.

This year’s featured production is Into the Woods by Stephen Sondheim—a layered retelling of classic fairy tales that explores what really happens after “happily ever after.”

Stephen is joined by cast members Ryan Joustra (The Witch) and Katie Davis (Cinderella), who share insights into their roles and the emotional depth of the show. Ryan discusses portraying the Witch as a fiercely protective mother, driven by love and loss, while Katie highlights Cinderella’s transformation in Act II—revealing a more complex, independent, and even frustrated version of the classic character.

Together, they explore how this production stands out for its energy,  authenticity, and balance of humor and darkness. The conversation dives into the challenges of performing such iconic roles—famously played by legends like Bernadette Peters—while still bringing fresh, personal interpretations.

The trio also reflects on the brilliance of Sondheim’s writing, from conversational musical phrasing to themes of grief, responsibility, and connection. Songs like “Children Will Listen,” “Last Midnight,” and “No One Is Alone” are highlighted for their lasting  impact and relevance.

The episode closes with a thoughtful discussion on how art shapes empathy, listening, and human connection—both onstage and in everyday life—reinforcing the idea that theater is not just entertainment, but a vital part of community.

🎭 Into the Woods runs through April 26 at Demens Landing Park. Audiences can enjoy the show under the stars with lawn seating or reserved tickets—making it a perfect night out in St. Pete.
