He had spent plenty of weekends taking part in Civil War reenactments, often held on the same land where the events had originally taken place. It was a familiar environment—people in uniform, movement around camp, and just enough unpredictability that you didn’t question every little thing you saw.

Which is why that one moment didn’t stand out right away.

Nothing about it felt unusual in the context of where he was or what he was doing. It fit just well enough to go unquestioned… at least at first.

But the longer he thought about it, the less it made sense.
