For as long as he could remember, there had always been something in the house. Not threatening, not intrusive—just present in a way that became easy to ignore over time. It followed a pattern, stayed in the background, and never crossed a line into anything that demanded attention.

Until one night, it did.

Standing between floors, in the quiet space where sound doesn’t quite carry the way it should, he heard something speak. Not distant. Not unclear. A voice, positioned just behind him, calm and deliberate. It said his name.

At first, it was easy to explain. Someone nearby. A voice from another room. But when that explanation disappeared, something else took its place—something that didn’t fit the pattern the house had always followed.

Because whatever had always been there had never done that before. And whatever did… didn’t feel like it belonged to the house at all.
