The story of Celeste Rivas Hernandez and David Anthony Burke doesn't start with charges or a courtroom. It starts with a child who was running — and a series of doors that should have been closed but weren't.
Celeste was reported missing three times. She was allegedly on Burke's Discord server as early as 2022, when she was approximately 12. By 2024, she was reportedly living in his Hollywood Hills home. His friends believed she was 19 and in college. She had fake IDs. And no one — not the platforms, not the adults around Burke, not the systems designed to protect kids — intervened.
Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott has spent over 30 years working with trauma survivors and perpetrators of violence. She's the author of The Minds of Mass Killers. She's worked in forensic mental health, domestic violence shelters, and crisis response. In this first part of a three-part interview series with Tony Brueski, she examines the psychological conditions that allegedly made Celeste a target — the family dynamics, the prior vulnerability, the resource gap between a working immigrant family and a celebrity infrastructure, and the platform failures that allegedly let a child get pulled into an adult's world with zero friction.
