It started with the dogs.

Late at night, they all began barking at once, focused on something moving through the alley behind the house. It was enough to get his attention, but not enough to expect anything out of the ordinary.

At first. When he finally looked outside, what he saw didn’t line up with anything familiar. It moved quickly, low to the ground, but not in a way that made sense for any animal he knew.
