While visiting family in Mississippi in the late 1990s, one family spent the night at a historic bed and breakfast tied to a disturbing Civil War-era legend involving twin girls and a servant accused of poisoning them.

Most of the family dismissed the story as local folklore. But late that night, two sisters sharing a bedroom overlooking the inn’s courtyard heard something outside that immediately caught their attention: the unmistakable sound of young children laughing and playing after dark.

Curious, they stepped onto the balcony expecting to find other guests’ children below. Instead, they found the courtyard completely empty.

At least, it looked empty at first.
