Hello! This is Dr. John Huss and I want to welcome you to our EDU 305 Introduction to Education course. As you know, our class can be found at http: //learnonline.com, and you will log in with your username and password that are the same as your NKU email. This will be a learning experience we will share together and one that will certainly have elements that will be noticeably different for you than a traditional on-campus class. There are many reasons why a student chooses an online format, ranging from sheer convenience to a desire to work more independently. Whatever your particular reason for selecting this online course, I will work with you, support you, and help you make this a successful experience. The student/ professor relationship will be a unique one because I will not be visible to you or accessible through conventional means. So I will rely on you to make me aware of your questions, your comments, and your needs. You can contact me through email at hussj@nku.edu. I will respond to you within twenty four hours although it will typically be sooner than that and I will make every effort to maintain a presence throughout the course. But as you probably anticipated when you signed up for this section, you will rely greatly on your own motivation to stay current with the materials, seek assistance when needed, and develop a productive pace that will allow you to avoid procrastination and the pitfalls of lingering behind too often as the weeks progress. If you were taking this course on campus you would be expected to participate in a minimum of two 50-minute sessions each week, in addition to the time necessary to read materials and review the weekly activities. So, budget your time wisely and do not hesitate to ask for information or clarification whenever you need it. You will check the "Course Module" section each week for the classroom instruction and activities. One of the exciting features of this class will be our use of technologies to deliver information and interact with one another, so make sure you have headphones and speakers for your computer because audio will be utilized frequently. Please note that all correspondences from the course will automatically be sent to your NKU email address only. So you must either check your NKU account regularly or have your email forwarded to your personal account of choice. Otherwise you may miss important class details. This class will introduce you to education as a career and attempt to present an honest look at the real world of students, teachers, classrooms and schools. The topics presented in the class and the ways in which they are presented are all designed to answer the question: What does this have to do with me and my future life as a teacher? I hope the course is enjoyable and allows you to meet your educational goals in a format that is consistent with your needs. I really look forward to working with you this semester.
