Fort Robinson already carried a heavy history long before Cathy ever stayed there.

The former military post in northwest Nebraska had seen war, death, imprisonment, and tragedy stretching back generations. By the late 1980s, parts of the fort had been turned into a park where families could rent the old officer’s quarters and spend weekends exploring the grounds.

That’s exactly what Cathy’s family did.

After a long day of horseback riding and sightseeing, everyone settled into the massive old brick house for the night. Sometime after midnight, Cathy woke to the sound of a child crying somewhere nearby.

At first, she assumed one of the kids staying in the house had gotten scared or lost.

But the farther she followed the sound through the dark hallways and staircases, the stranger the experience became… especially when she realized nobody else in the house had heard a thing.
