What began as a cheap apartment above a row of downtown storefronts slowly became something Cara could no longer explain away. At first it was only footsteps in empty rooms, doors standing open, and the uneasy feeling that someone else was inside the apartment when no one should have been there.

Then one night, a friend screamed after seeing something move inside the bedroom closet.

After that, the atmosphere inside the apartment changed completely.

A few days later, the three women made the mistake Cara still regrets more than fifteen years later: they tried communicating with whatever might be there. An empty bottle sat on the floor between them while they nervously asked for a sign.

Nothing happened… until Cara spoke. The bottle moved. And from that moment forward, the activity no longer felt random. It felt aware of her.
