As Syracuse collapsed into disorder, the mother city of Corinth sent Timoleon with a small hired army to intervene. James Romm notes that to the surprise of many, Dionysius the Younger abdicated voluntarily in exchange for a peaceful retirement in Corinth. He lived his remaining years in impoverishment, reportedly working as a music teacher and priest. His downfall became the source of the proverb "Dionysius is in Corinth," signifying that even the most powerful ruler can be brought low. Dionysius claimed his ability to endure exile proved he had actually learned from Plato's teachings. (6/8)
