Can Dreams Predict the Future? Michelle Lerner on Grief, Synchronicity, Magic, and the Human-Animal Bond, The Byte!

What if your dreams could tell you something was happening in the waking world?
Michelle Lerner has experienced dreams so vivid and specific that, afterward, real-life events seemed to mirror what she had dreamed. A horse throwing a shoe. A friend's grandfather approaching death. Moments that raise an unsettling and fascinating question: Are some dreams more than dreams?
In this deeply moving conversation, Michelle — author of the acclaimed novel Ring — takes us into the mysterious territory where precognitive dreams, synchronicity, grief, meditation, mystical experiences, animals, and the possibility of a hidden connection between all things begin to overlap.
And that's only the beginning. Michelle also shares what it feels like to briefly experience something beyond the thinking mind — a fleeting glimpse “behind the veil” that was so profound that a few seconds seemed worth an entire four-day meditation retreat.
This is a conversation about the mysteries we can't explain, the losses we can't avoid, and the extraordinary human capacity to keep creating beauty anyway.
Can Dreams Predict the Future?
One of the most fascinating parts of this conversation is Michelle's experience with dreams that seemed to correspond with events occurring outside her immediate awareness.
These weren't vague dreams that could be interpreted after the fact. They were unusually vivid experiences involving specific people, animals, and circumstances.
Michelle describes how these experiences occurred at different periods in her life and then disappeared for years before returning.
We explore what it feels like to experience a dream that later appears to correspond with something happening in the real world — and the difficulty of explaining that experience to someone who hasn't experienced it themselves.
What Are Precognitive Dreams?
The phenomenon of precognitive dreams has fascinated people for centuries.
Michelle's experiences raise questions such as:
- Can dreams predict future events?
- Why do some dreams feel incredibly real?
- Can you dream about something happening to someone else?
- Are vivid dreams sometimes connected to events outside ourselves?
- What is the difference between a prophetic dream and coincidence?
- Can dreams reveal information we don't consciously know?
- Why do some dreams seem to come true?
- What causes déjà vu-like experiences involving dreams?
Michelle's interpretation is particularly intriguing. Rather than necessarily thinking of her dreams as predictions of the future, she wonders whether they might represent a kind of tapping into an interconnected universal force — sensing something that is happening elsewhere rather than seeing something that hasn't happened yet.
I mean, I've had my own experiences with dreams that have changed my life, so I am all in for this episode!
The Experience of Going “Behind the Veil”
Michelle also describes an extraordinary experience during a meditation retreat.
After four days of sitting and walking meditation, she experienced a brief moment in which she felt completely outside her usual thinking mind.
It lasted only seconds.
But those seconds were enough.
She describes the experience as a profound sense of simply existing in the space around her, rather than constantly thinking about it.
It was a fleeting glimpse of what she describes as something like going behind the veil — an experience of deep connection that is extraordinarily difficult to put into words.
Why Is It So Hard to Explain Mystical Experiences?
One of the most compelling ideas in this conversation is that human language may simply be inadequate for describing certain experiences.
Michelle uses a beautiful metaphor inspired by a line from musician Ani DiFranco: trying to intellectually comprehend the universe can be like trying to put an ocean into a paper cup.
Perhaps our minds are simply not equipped to contain everything we experience.
Perhaps we don't always have to understand an experience intellectually to recognize that it mattered.
And perhaps mystery isn't a problem to solve.
Maybe sometimes mystery is something to experience.
I know I've had challenges describing what I've witnessed and experienced, whether in my daily life, or my dreams. It is a state of complete witness...and noetic experiences are beyond human comprehension, so there's that.
The Miracle in Michelle Lerner's Story!
Near the end of our conversation, Michelle's story becomes bigger than dreams and synchronicity.
It's about persistence.
It's about continuing to create even when life is hard.
It's about using your experiences — including the painful ones — to make something meaningful for other people.
Michelle has moved through law, illness, animals, grief, writing, poetry, and experiences that challenge easy explanations. And through all of it, she has continued to create beauty.
That's the miracle I hear in Michelle's story.
Not that difficult things don't happen.
They do.
But that we can keep going anyway.
We can remain curious.
We can create.
We can love.
We can make meaning.
And sometimes, if we're paying attention, we may encounter something we can't explain — a strange dream, an impossible coincidence, a moment of synchronicity, or a brief glimpse behind the veil.
Maybe we don't have to explain everything.
Maybe sometimes we just have to notice.
And keep going.
