For five weeks after Melissa Barthelemy vanished, someone used her phone to call her fifteen-year-old sister Amanda. Always from crowded Manhattan locations. Always under three minutes. Always targeting the teenager, never the mother. The calls described what had happened in terms designed to terrorize a child. Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to Melissa's murder. This look back examines the phone evidence that helped build the case — and what those calls reveal about the person investigators spent over a decade trying to identify.
The phone trail is precise. A burner phone Melissa had connected with traveled from Massapequa Park to Midtown Manhattan on the day she disappeared — the exact route between Heuermann's home and his architecture office. Hours later, Melissa's own phone traveled the same route in reverse. Prosecutors also alleged Heuermann searched online for images of the victims' families — their sisters, their children — after their deaths. The calls to Amanda weren't random cruelty. They were targeted.
Melissa was a cosmetology graduate from Buffalo who dreamed of owning her own salon. The city was expensive. The salon job was slow. She ended up in circumstances she never planned for. This segment also covers Maureen Brainard-Barnes — the first of the Gilgo Four to disappear in 2007, a twenty-five-year-old mother of two whose daughter Nicolette was seven when she lost her mother. Heuermann pleaded guilty to both murders. We revisit where the case stood at the time of our reporting. Their stories come first. The evidence follows.
