Nick Reiner's Trust Was Written When He Was a Baby — Nobody Updated It for 32 Years

Nick Reiner case — a trust document written for an infant in 1993 is now reportedly the reason a judge may release more than $1.5 million in the middle of a murder case. And nobody updated it for thirty-two years.

Rob and Michele Reiner allegedly created individual trusts for each of their children, funded separately from the larger family estate. The terms for Nick's trust reportedly required mandatory payouts at age thirty and thirty-five — fixed dates, no discretion, no conditions attached. When Nick turned thirty in September 2023, over two years before the alleged murders, the first half was apparently due. According to the petition, it was never released, and no one has explained why. Now his legal team argues the money was already his — and the trustee reportedly agrees.

The slayer statute is supposed to prevent killers from profiting off their crimes. But it requires a conviction or a civil finding to activate. In the window between arrest and verdict, the trust document is the only protection. And this trust reportedly had no protection at all.

This episode breaks down what should have been in the document. Three provisions — an indictment freeze that locks distributions the moment charges are filed, a discretionary structure that removes automatic payouts, and behavioral triggers that condition distributions on sobriety and stability — each exist in trusts across the country.
