The Piaggio company switched gears from making military vehicles to the iconic scooter at the end of World War ll. Vespas were partially designed as a vehicle that could be used by women and priests, so they could zip around in long skirts. Vespa, which means wasp in Italian, got that name because it has the rounded, long body of a wasp. The anniversary events include a Vespa parade through the streets of Rome on Saturday.
