Nancy Guthrie's Ransom Hoaxer Sentenced To WHAT?

Somewhere in this Nancy Guthrie case, the truth got lost in the paperwork, and Tony Brueski found it while combing through the record. The man who sent fake ransom demands to her family, while search teams were trying to find her, just took a plea deal that looks more like a parking ticket than a threat wired straight into a grieving family's phone. 

Harassment. That's the charge he pleaded to. Two years capped at the federal level, but he walked away with five years of probation and every count running concurrently. Retired FBI special agent Jennifer Coffindaffer called it a travesty on the record, and she's not wrong to worry, investigators are already tracking a dozen copycat extortion attempts agents have nicknamed the TMZ Twelve. 

Then there's the four-million-dollar ransom note, the strange apology letter mailed only to local television stations calling Nancy's death an accident, and the fact that both were reportedly traced back to the same IP address, one of the few solid threads investigators actually have. Porch Guy, the person connected to the case, still hasn't been identified or picked up. 

Meanwhile, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos is fielding his own set of questions. Discrepancies in his record, a reporter pushing back, and an answer that amounted to telling him to enjoy his hit piece. The FBI and the Sheriff's Department can't agree on jurisdiction, can't agree on which ransom notes are real, and reportedly disagree internally over whether some of the evidence even holds up. 

One of the case's most valuable physical clues reportedly flew to Florida and back before investigators ever ran it against a database, a detail that hasn't gotten nearly the attention it deserves given everything riding on it.
