What Lindsay Clancy Was Hearing That Her Doctors Missed

Between September 2022 and January 2023, Lindsay Clancy was prescribed at least nine psychiatric medications by providers who diagnosed her with anxiety and depression. According to both civil lawsuits filed in her case, what she was actually experiencing was something entirely different — auditory hallucinations, command voices, and a psychiatric emergency her providers never identified.
This episode explains what postpartum psychosis is and why most people — including many medical professionals — confuse it with postpartum depression. They are not the same condition. They are not on the same spectrum. Postpartum depression involves sadness, fatigue, and difficulty bonding. Postpartum psychosis involves a break from reality so complete that the person experiencing it cannot tell the difference between a hallucination and the world in front of them. It affects one to two mothers in every thousand births, and there is no standardized screening for it in routine postnatal care anywhere in the country.
Lindsay was a labor and delivery nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital. She went to her providers, called crisis lines, and admitted herself to McLean Hospital with suicidal ideation. She described what she thought were intrusive thoughts. According to a forensic psychiatric evaluation, she had undiagnosed Bipolar Disorder I — a condition where antidepressants can trigger the exact psychotic episodes her doctors kept failing to recognize. Her husband Patrick described her as acting like a zombie on her medications. An outside hospital determined she was overmedicated and misdiagnosed.
Her murder trial begins with jury selection on July 20. This is what the jury — and the audience — need to understand before it starts.
