Patrick Clancy, husband of Lindsay Clancy, returned to the stand today in the murder trial of the Duxbury, Massachusetts mother accused of strangling their three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. Clancy faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation. She's pleaded not guilty, and her attorney, Kevin Reddington, is building an insanity defense around claims of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.
Today it was Reddington's turn to ask the questions, and he used Patrick to reinforce the defense's narrative rather than attack it. Patrick testified that Lindsay was afraid to go back to work because she didn't want to be away from the kids — the kind of detail that reads very differently depending on which side is building the story around it. The defense also walked him through her mental state after each birth, and got him to confirm that when she only took a few pills of each prescription, it wasn't defiance — it was because a physician told her to.
That last point matters. It's the difference between "she wasn't taking her medication" and "she was following doctor's orders while doctors kept adjusting what she was on." Reddington knows exactly which version he wants the jury to remember.
Prosecutors still have to convince twelve people that Lindsay Clancy understood what she was doing that day. After the killings, she allegedly tried to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window and is now paralyzed from the waist down. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to run several weeks.
