ARTS ALIVE St. Pete Catalyst's Bill DeYoung: American Stage's Anthony Gervais

Dropping by the Arts Alive! studio today is Anthony Gervais, interim executive director at American Stage.  Ostensibly, we’re discussing the theater company’s big weekend event. The American Stage Theatre Flea Market (3-8 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday) represents a bit of spring cleaning (well, summer cleaning) of costumes, including but not limited to regular stuff like dresses, dress shirts, pants, jackets and shoes), furniture, et cetera … the sort of material that collects after 49 years of putting up a full season of shows every 12 months. That’s right, American Stage will turn 50 in 2027, and Gervais reveals there are big plans on the drawing board.

The St. Pete native went from “associate” artistic director to “interim” upon the departure of Helen R. Murray, who left the organization in May.  There’s a lot to talk about.  The discussion also covers his theatrical experience, which began at the Pinellas County Center for the Arts, and includes writing, directing, acting and singing for various bay area companies (Gervais was last seen in the cast of American Stage’s Into the Woods at Demens Landing Park).
