Why Nancy Guthrie's Kidnapper Never Touched the Money

Sheriff Nanos sat down for his six-month message on the Nancy Guthrie case and called his office's relationship with the FBI great. In the same stretch, the ransom letters were finally released, and Nanos acknowledged thousands of hours of video still haven't been reviewed. Six months into the disappearance of a 74-year-old woman taken from her own Tucson home. Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer joins Tony Brueski to say what most people watching that message were thinking, and to bring receipts nobody else has.

Her receipts come off the blockchain. After the Pima County Sheriff's Office accidentally printed the alleged kidnapper's Bitcoin wallet address on a media release, Coffindaffer traced every transaction on it. The demand was allegedly four million dollars. The wallet's entire history is one deposit: roughly three hundred dollars in Bitcoin, moved by the FBI on February 10, never touched again. No ransom was ever paid — which sits uneasily beside the family's public statement that they did their part.

The wallet also carried messages, written directly onto the blockchain, including the exact words Savannah Guthrie said on camera about being willing to pay. An open channel to the alleged kidnapper existed for six months. It was never answered. Coffindaffer explains what that silence tends to mean, and why the answer changes depending on whether Nancy's captors were organized professionals or a hired man in over his head.

That split is her other headline: she believes the two ransom notes came from two different authors. One wrote threats on a schedule. One wrote an apology that reads like it was drafted with a death penalty statute in mind.
