Why Lindsay Clancy's Psychiatrist Worked Without Her Chart

Four separate places treated Lindsay Clancy in the four months before January 24, 2023. Testimony on Day 10 of her Plymouth Superior Court murder trial established that none of them could read what the others were writing down.

Aster Mental Health had her from September. South Shore's perinatal behavioral health program had her in November. McLean Hospital admitted her for five days in early January. A program in Rhode Island evaluated her in December. Dr. Jennifer Tufts, the psychiatrist who saw her most, testified she had no access to the records from any of the others and never requested them.

That gap has a rule behind it. Under Massachusetts law, mental health information sits behind a higher wall than ordinary medical data, and a provider needs a signed authorization to reach across it. Tufts confirmed she never put that form in front of her patient.

The consequences arrived in pieces. Tufts said she found out about the McLean admission only after discharge. She said she did not know Clancy had disclosed thoughts of harming the children, and that had she known, she would have been very concerned and might have contacted the state child protection agency.

The afternoon brought Julie Paul, the psychiatric nurse practitioner who founded the South Shore perinatal program in 2018. Her testimony about how Clancy reached that program, what her screening actually scored, and how long she remained a patient there changes the shape of the whole November timeline.

Tony runs the day the way it happened, including Judge William Sullivan's morning ruling permitting three additional defense doctors.

Clancy has entered a plea of not guilty. Her attorneys argue postpartum psychosis left her not criminally responsible. Prosecutors say the killings were intentional.
