In 1876, pieces of what appeared to be raw meat fell across a Kentucky farm beneath a clear sky, creating one of the strangest mysteries in American history. We follow the Kentucky Meat Shower from eyewitness accounts and scientific testing to bizarre theories and the explanation researchers still consider the most plausible today.
In 1876, Rebecca Crouch was outside her home in Bath County, Kentucky, when something began falling from a perfectly clear sky.
It looked like raw meat.
What became known as the Kentucky Meat Shower would make newspapers across the country, attract scientific attention, inspire some truly bizarre theories and leave behind a mystery people are still talking about 150 years later.
This week, we’re following the story from the moment the first pieces fell to the people who actually tasted the mystery meat, the scientists who examined it under microscopes, the preserved sample that still exists today and the surprisingly believable explanation involving vultures.
So... did it really rain meat in Kentucky?
