At sea, weather is not background. It shapes safety, aviation, command decisions, operational risk and the ability to work effectively in some of the most demanding conditions on the water.
In this episode of Women in Maritime, Julia Gosling speaks with Lt Cdr Fran Crowsley-Allen, Royal Navy Meteorologist, instructor, mother of two and co-chair of the Naval Service Women’s Network.
Fran originally trained to drive ships before specialising in meteorology and oceanography, where environmental information becomes part of tactical decision-making. Her career has taken her across the world, including work connected to the search for MH370, operations in severe sea states, and now teaching tactical meteorology and oceanography to the next generation.
This conversation looks at the role of weather in naval safety, the importance of communicating uncertainty with confidence, and what it means to support command decisions at sea.
Fran also speaks about life as a woman at sea, being one of very few women onboard, dual-serving parent life, retention, flexible careers, menopause policy and why the lived experience of women in maritime matters as much as the statistics.
A thoughtful and important conversation about service, science, judgement, motherhood, culture and the future of women at sea.
