Surviving 9/11: A Story of Providence, Courage & Remembrance

In this week’s Team Never Quit Podcast, Marcus and Melanie meet with Daniel Geraghty, who shares his deeply personal and harrowing account of surviving the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Daniel was a newlywed, transitioning from military life into the corporate world, and working near the World Trade Center. On that September morning, he was preparing to make his way to Tower 2 for business. A seemingly insignificant series of delays—including an unexpected breakfast with his mother-in-law and spilled coffee on his shirt and tie—changed the course of his life. Those few extra minutes meant Daniel was not inside the South Tower when it was struck at 9:03 a.m.

When Daniel emerged from the subway near the World Trade Center, he encountered chaos unlike anything he had ever experienced. Sirens filled the streets. Paper rained through lower Manhattan. Looking toward the Towers, Daniel witnessed the North Tower engulfed in fire and people desperately signaling from above.

Then the second plane struck.

Daniel recalls the tremendous fireball, the concussion, flying debris, and thousands of people running for their lives. Believing he might die, he still found himself unable to ignore a woman who had fallen in the stampede—until another stranger appeared, lifted her from the street, and carried her to safety. It is an image of humanity and courage that has remained with Daniel ever since.

Daniel's story is more than an eyewitness account of one of America's darkest days. It is a powerful reflection on survival, providence, service, courage, and the weight of being given another day. For thousands, September 11 remains a story preserved only in remembrance. Daniel knows how close he came to becoming one of them—and why he remains profoundly grateful that his own story continued.

In This Episode, You’ll Hear:

  • The seemingly ordinary delay Daniel believes saved his life.
  • His transition from the Army into corporate life in New York City.
  • What Daniel witnessed as he emerged from the subway near the World Trade Center.
  • His firsthand account of the moments before and after the second plane struck.
  • The internal struggle between his military instinct to run toward danger and the realization that he needed to get away.
  • The unforgettable acts of courage and humanity Daniel witnessed in the streets.
  • The emotional burden carried by those who survived.
  • Daniel's reflections on gratitude, remembrance, and why September 11 must never be forgotten.

This is an intense, moving conversation about a day that changed America forever—and one man's extraordinary experience of being just minutes away from a very different fate.

Listen in as Daniel Geraghty takes Marcus and Melanie back to September 11, 2001, sharing what he saw, what he survived, and the moments that continue to live with him more than two decades later.
