Four Hundred Lawsuits Say Cook County Staff Abused Children in Detention for Decades

Forty-one people were shot in Chicago over the weekend. Three are dead. Fifteen of them were shot at a single gathering in Washington Park where police were already on scene trying to disperse the crowd. Rontonio Guterz, 35, was killed. No arrests. A fifteen-year-old named Kyren Wormely was killed in South Austin. An eighteen-year-old named Kamarion Coleman was killed in Crest Hill. Then the story nobody is covering: roughly 400 lawsuits allege that staff at Cook County's Juvenile Temporary Detention Center sexually abused children in custody going back decades. One woman says she was fifteen and pregnant when a staff member raped her in 2000. An eleven-month-old baby named Michael Ortiz was murdered in Aurora Illinois in 2010 and the man who was caring for him was finally arrested this month, sixteen years later. A Michigan woman is facing forty-eight counts involving three children under thirteen she babysat. The federal government launched a massive trucking fraud investigation across 200 driving schools including Michigan and Indiana. USDA announced the Ranchers First Initiative and the American cattle herd is at a 75-year low. Plus a Marine update from my son, and the widow who would not stop showing up until the judge gave her justice.
