Dumas gets launched into the year 5053 and somehow comes out of it looking better than ever. This week Dodger, Mathas and Indeimaus talk Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo, Gonzo's 2004 adaptation that takes the revenge novel everyone half-remembers from school, sets it in space, tells the whole thing from Albert's perspective instead of the Count's, and then wraps it in that unmistakable static-texture art style where the patterns sit still while the characters move through them. We get into whether that visual gimmick actually serves the story or just distracts from it, why handing the POV to a naive teenager turns out to be the smartest structural choice the show makes, Jean-Jacques Burnel's score, and the question of how much of Dumas survives once you've bolted on an ancient entity possessing your protagonist. Twenty-four episodes of immaculate pettiness. Come get ruined with us.
