In the middle of a sunny afternoon, they were washing dishes inside their military housing in Fallon, Nevada, when a small boy ran past the opening between the kitchen and front hall. He appeared to be three or four years old, with light blond curls, jean shorts, and a boldly striped shirt. He was smiling and almost skipping as he headed toward another room. He looked so solid and ordinary that they assumed a neighborhood child had wandered into the wrong house.

They turned off the water, dried their hands, and called to him gently so he would not be frightened. But the room he had entered was empty.
