A bedroom full of cousins should have made it impossible for anyone to touch the chessboard unnoticed. Yet in the middle of a game, one child cried out and pointed. Every piece still in play was lying flat, with the black pieces facing one player and the white pieces facing the other.

No one admitted touching them. The children began accusing one another. Then they looked back at the board. Every piece was standing upright again.
