Fantastical stories can terrify us because they take the familiar rules of our world and turn them upside down. They introduce creatures, powers, and possibilities that cannot be explained by reason, leaving us vulnerable to the unknown. A monster may be imaginary, but the fear it awakens, of losing control, being hunted, or discovering that reality is not what we thought, feels entirely real.
In the best fantastical horror, the impossible becomes believable enough to make us wonder whether something extraordinary and terrifying might be waiting just beyond the limits of our understanding.
