Nick Reiner vs. Lindsay Clancy: What Makes Them Different?!

Nick Reiner and Lindsay Clancy are both at the center of high-profile murder cases, and online arguments keep collapsing them into one question about mental illness. The legal records do not make them the same case. 

A Los Angeles County grand jury indicted Reiner on two murder counts in the deaths of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner. He pleaded not guilty. The indictment also alleges multiple-murder and lying-in-wait special circumstances, and prosecutors say he personally used a knife. Years before the charges, Reiner spoke publicly about addiction, many treatment stays, homelessness, relapse, and destructive behavior during drug use, including wrecking his parents' guest house.
 
Clancy's Massachusetts trial centered on whether severe mental illness erased criminal responsibility. Her defense argued she suffered from postpartum psychosis when her three children died. Prosecutors disputed that and argued her actions were deliberate. Judge William Sullivan declared a mistrial September 4 after seven days of deliberations. Jurors who later spoke publicly described an 11-1 division favoring a not-guilty-by-reason-of-insanity verdict. 

The internet has turned that legal distinction into a loyalty test. A TikTok creator claimed he ended a $200,000 wedding after his fiancee expressed a different view of the Clancy case, then called her a monster. That story spread because the argument was no longer only about Lindsay Clancy. It became a judgment about the person sitting across from you. 

Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott, author of Nightbird, joins Tony Brueski to separate diagnosis from responsibility and public outrage from evidence. They examine why addiction history does not automatically answer a murder charge and why a psychosis defense does not erase the deaths at the center of a case. They also ask whether comparing defendants can become a shortcut that hides the facts a jury must decide. 

Reiner returns to court September 15. Clancy's prosecution remains pending after the mistrial.
