Celeste Rivas Hernandez wrongful death lawsuit — on the week Celeste would have turned sixteen, her family filed a lawsuit reaching beyond the man charged.

Filed September 8, 2026, twelve causes of action. Nine target David Anthony Burke. Three target the adults around him: his mother Colleen Burke, manager Josh Marshall, security guard Sheldon Jacques, and business entities. The family alleges Burke used his wealth to gain access to Celeste and that surrounding adults knew and did nothing.

Burke's former financial manager testified to earnings exceeding ten million dollars. In October 2025, weeks after Celeste's remains were discovered, he transferred two Texas homes to his mother to shield assets. Burke fired his attorneys and uses a public defender. He is held without bail.

Former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer examines what this lawsuit could mean for the criminal case.
