After nearly four years of night shifts at a nursing home, she had grown used to the occasional feeling of being watched. She knew which rooms had seen residents come and go, and how many of those residents had died there. Usually, she could put that knowledge aside and get on with her work.

One night, renovations left her without her usual place to rest during a break. A recliner in a resident’s room seemed like a comfortable alternative. The resident enjoyed company, and she only planned to stay for thirty minutes.
