Hello, and welcome to the Obligatory Domestic-Travel Episode! Listen, we're new and trying hard to build an audience, so we focus on a U.S. destination this time. (But watch out for the next episode! Hard to imagine in this highly enlightened, nonsexist day and age—when all men and women are, at last, treated equally—but there was a time, in the murky realms of history, when certain unnamed bars in certain unnamed cities would not allow women to enter! OK, they were McSorley's in Manhattan and the Sazerac Bar in New Orleans. Crazy, right? Illegal, right? No. In New York City, it took an entire city council to let women get plastered. In the Big Easy, it took a determined group of women in large hats hankering for whisky. Scary! Do NOT stand between them and that bottle of Macallan 18 Double Cask, if you know what's good for you. ABOUT MARK ORWOLL Mark Orwoll (markorwoll.substack.com) is a veteran journalist and author. He earned the Society of American Travel Writers Travel Journalist of the Year silver award in 2025. He started his career as a newspaperman in California, then moved to New York, where he was a magazine writer and editor.
